• Etheric Senses; Effuse Personal Primal Energy
An Initiate of Prime studies learns to sense and see the lingering effects of the universe’s creation, called Primal Energy, be it stored in Tass, welling up from a Node, traveling across a powerful current, swirling through a natural Pattern or shining during a Juncture. His Prime senses allow him to detect the use of Reality Deviant manipulations, to determine when a coincidence was the result of a hypertech Effect and to see the flow of energy as it is shaped and cast forth. Although such perceptions are not necessarily sufficient to determine the exact Effect, they do alert the agent to the twisting of reality. Just as each Convention has its own perspective on Prime, each agent has a different sort of Prime sense. Some agents recognize Prime as money and economic fortuity. Others feel it as a sort of intangible rhythm in their work. A few ascribe to Prime a different sense entirely, a sort of comprehension that cannot be translated from machine senses. Regardless of whether it is a pure, crystal matrix at the core of arcane hypertech devices or a swirling darkness of the original Void, it represents power.

By sensing the strongest currents of Primal Energy, an agent may align his intentions so that they flow with his own Pattern, supporting his Genius. Without the first rank of Prime, the agent cannot store free Primal Energy within his own Pattern beyond the amount he receives from his Genius. Agents without Prime Science cannot gain Primal Energy ratings above their Genius rating. The agent can’t necessarily use this power to gain additional Primal Energy from meditation, but if someone tries to provide the agent with additional Primal Energy, the agent must have at least this rudimentary understanding of Prime to be able to make effective use of the excess resources. In conjunction with the other Spheres, the agent can see Primal Energy in various Patterns or recognize specific sorts of Resonance and their strength. The agent can also determine if an area has strong Prime resources (like a Node) or when a Juncture that releases Primal Energy might occur.

By reaching out and touching Primal Energy metaphysically, the agent can create tiny diversions in the energy that fuels the cosmos. She can twist the power of Primal Energy, storing it in an object for later use or releasing it for specific cases. She can also use this knowledge to cast other technologies into stronger forms. The patterns of physical matter and forces may be enhanced, creating hypertech materials that may damage extradimensional beings or charged lasers to burn specially-protected Reality Deviants. Moreover, Primal Energy itself may be spun into a blow that hammers at Patterns, allowing an agent to fire bolts of pure Primal energy or to form a glowing weapon of raw power.

Base matter and energy that are already infused with Primal Energy, the inert forms of Tass, may also be activated, structuring it so as to compose temporary Gadgets which store Effects for use by anyone. In conjunction with various Spheres, the agent can create materials, forces or creations from nothing. The agent can also spin dreams, nightmares and quasi-real phantasms with Mind Science, or generate new constructs of interdimensional energy. Whenever an agent creates a Pattern “from nothing,” she uses this power of Prime to divert a small amount of vacuum energy into that new Pattern. Thus, all Effects that create Matter, Forces or Life out of nothingness rely on the agent also using Prime 2.

Normally, an agent cannot pull Primal Energy directly from the vacuum itself. Although the flow is immense and consigned, it is also tied intimately to the topology of the universe. However, in some special places (Nodes) and times (Junctures), excess Primal Energy bubbles up through space-time, there to be taken by an agent with command of Prime. Even though the agent cannot steal the Primal Energy directly from a Pattern, he can take advantage of the rare opportunities where Primal Energy arises unconnected to any Pattern.

At this level of understanding, an agent skilled in Prime gains the ability to transfer Primal Energy into and from Matrices (storage devices for Primal Energy), or from a Matrix to an agent’s Genius or back. The agent can pull Primal Energy out of inert Tass for personal use, as well.

At this level, inert Tass may be sublimated and forged into permanent Inventions and Devices with their own Enlightenment ratings for specific hypertech Effects, just as the agent installed it into Gadgets at the previous level, and living Tass may now be activated so as to become a living Gadget. Chimerical and ephemeric Tass, such as the substance of dreams and the ectoplasm of extradimensional objects, follows the same rule as physical matter — sentient chimera and living ephemera are treated the same as living beings, while inert dreamstuff and ectoplasm follows the rule of Tass created of base matter and energy. As he enhanced knives and energy weapons before, the agent of this level now gains the ability to enhance living beings, such that hands and claws can now inflict damage directly upon Patterns. In conjunction with other Spheres, the agent can create powerful tools or fuel them with energy. The agent can not only create items from nothing, he can steal away a small measure of Primal Energy from Patterns as they decay. Such energy returns quickly to the flow, and it is more directed than harnessed, but it can offer a small measure of additional power to the agent’s Effects.

• • • • Expel Base Energy from Matter & Forces; Sublimate Primal Life; Permanently Enhance Matter & Forces; Suffuse Matter & Forces; Create Matrix; Tap Wellspring
As Disciples of Prime learned to divert and ripple the flow of energy through the Patterns of existence, Adepts discover how to return the Primal Energy to the cosmos, at least from settled and unconnected Patterns (Matter and Forces). Doing so has the direct and deadly effect of erasing them from mental and physical existence. This energy returns immediately to the universe as the object vanishes forever, but with proper use of other Prime Science, the agent can sometimes divert a small measure of the released power into his other Effects. Adepts also learn how to sublimate the Primal patterns of living Tass so as to create Inventions and Devices, as well as those nonliving wonders meant to be grafted to living creatures, such as cybernetic arms or neural implants. The agent also learns how to take the nonliving Patterns of existence which are not suffused with free Primal Energy and infuse them with that from his own Pattern, creating Tass, or sublimating that Tass into a Matrix resonating with his own Genius.

At places with strong Resonance, the Adepts of Prime also possess the skills tap a wellspring of free Quintessence. This act is the hypertech equivalent of opening a fire hydrant on a hot day — it will soon be shut off, but is very useful while it lasts. Doing so may also recharge the Primal Energy of Matrices in a controlled Effect. In conjunction with other Spheres, the agent can enhance objects with selective qualities, enhance Procedures and place them into items permanently or disperse all manner of Patterns back into the cosmos.
